Ann graduated with honors from the University of Texas at Austin in 1979 with a Bachelor's degree in journalism. She received her Juris Doctorate from the University of Houston in 1982. Ann joined Mike Phillips and Associates in 1984, where she specialized in personal injury insurance defense matters. In 1986, she and her husband started their own insurance defense practice which they maintained until 2000, when her husband was elected to the Texas Court of Appeals. Ann joined Western Litigation, Inc. in 2001, managing medical malpractice litigation for Memorial Hermann Hospital System.
